The million mask march
THe anonymous starters of the 5 November Million Mask March predicted the "largest global protest" in history.
Thousands were wearing Guy Fawkes masks and gathered in London and Washington DC, they were joined by other protesters across the globe from places such as Canada to Guatemala to the Netherlands. Marchers carried banners and signs sayings things such as "One solution, revolution" and "A for anarchy". Most protesters were peaceful- some were not.
What is the Million Mask March?
The march is a protest done by an international anonymous group of hackinng activists. The march was to raise up the issue they had for the corruption in power. In the uk, it occurs at the same time as bonfire night which is a rememberence of the day guy fawkes tried to blow up the houses of parliament in 1605
What are the issues?
Their goal is to see a good change in the world and how it is led."We have seen the abuses and malpractice of this government, and governments before it, we have seen the encroaching destruction of many civil liberties we hold dear, we have seen the pushes to make the internet yet another part of the surveillance state, we have seen the government's disregard for migrants, for the poor, the elderly and the Disabled, we have seen the capital, profit and greed of the few put before the well-being of the many and we say enough is enough," the facebook page says.
Why wear masks?
The guy fawkes makes is worn in the film v for vendetta to battle the fascist state. The comic was later made into a fimlm in 2006 and masks were made for Merchandise. Two years later, Anonymous published a list of protest instructions, one of them was "Cover your face. This will prevent your identification from videos taken by hostiles, other protesters or security". The Economist explains, taking inspiration from the film, "the V for Vendetta mask provided just the cover that Anonymous needed."
so far, because no violence has been shown they are considered as good citizens who just want to get their point across to others by doing a anonymous march.
Trafalgar Square arrests
3 men ages of 38, 50 and 55 were arrested for having weapons on them such as knifes, smoke and paint grenades, gas canisters and lock picks.
3 officers had got injured during the march but not life threatening ones. The people responsible for this 2 out of 3 were arrested.
Not only the police were injured, the horses were also assulted.
Some protesters were treated for injuries and were given first aid at the scene.
Many eyewitnesses said that a surge of activity took place around half an hour in when the people at the front of the protest broke away from the route and headed towards the churchill war rooms and crowds also congrigated outside buckingham palace. Bottles were thrown and fireworks were set off towards the officers.
Away from thr action a polie car was set alight by the protesters while it was parked down a side road.
All these things above are examples of being a bad citizen, without the violence the protest would have been harmless and would have still got their point across. With the violence involved they are not showing a positive contirubution to society.
